In this article, I will go into more detail about winter sports in Finland

The country in the far north of Europe, known for its breathtaking winter landscapes, offers a wide range of opportunities for locals and tourists for various winter sports activities. Long, snowy winters make it a perfect destination. Whether it’s racing down ski slopes or gliding on skis through a snowy forest to a leisurely hike. Finland has something for everyone when it comes to ice and snow. The combination of nature and modern amenities makes Finland the perfect destination to experience winter sports. Whether you’re a pro or a beginner, Finland’s winter wonderland is sure to offer you a variety of options.

Skiing and snowboarding: A paradise for adrenaline addicts

Finland offers numerous ski resorts that are suitable for both beginners and experienced winter sports enthusiasts. Famous ski resorts such as Levi, Ylläs and Ruka offer great slopes, modern lifts and nearby accommodation. The snow season in Finland, which lasts from October to May in the north and until March in the south of the country, allows you to enjoy skiing and snowboarding for a long time. Finland’s ski resorts offer a variety of slopes, from easy beginner slopes to challenging black runs, so there is something for every skill level.

I personally recommend you visit the Pyhä-Luosto ski resort in Lapland. It offers slopes for all skill levels, including black runs. However, what makes Pyhä-Luosto really special is its stunning natural beauty, with snow-covered trees, frozen lakes and breathtaking views of the surrounding wilderness. The ski resort also offers a variety of other activities such as snowshoeing, dog sledding and Northern Lights safaris. It is therefore a great destination for those looking for a varied winter sports experience.

Here is a map of the Luosto ski resort:

Pyhä-Luosto is also relatively affordable compared to some of the more popular ski resorts in Finland, with lift tickets starting at around 40 € per day. The accommodation options range from budget-friendly guesthouses to luxury hotels, so there’s something for every budget. If you’re looking for a unique and unforgettable skiing experience in Finland, Pyhä-Luosto is definitely worth a visit. However, keep in mind that “affordable” in Finland can be quite expensive compared to other countries.

Side note: In comparison, the Levi ski area offers a little more, but is also a little more expensive.

In comparison, the Levi ski resort offers a little more, but is also a little more expensive. You have a choice of four different options, each with several slopes.

Cross-Country Skiing: Discover the Beauty of Finnish Winter
#

Cross-country skiing is a popular winter sport in Finland, where you can ski through snow-covered forests, across frozen lakes and under the light of the Northern Lights. There are, for example, cross-country skiing trails that are floodlit so that you can ski even after dark. If you are looking for cross-country skiing near Helsinki, there are many options. The Helsinki region offers a variety of trails suitable for all skill levels. However, one of my favourite and most beautiful cross-country skiing options near Helsinki is the Oittaa recreation area, which is located near Espoo.

The Oittaa recreation area offers a wide range of cross-country ski trails, from easy to challenging, leading through snow-covered forests along the Bodomjärvi River. The advantage of this area is that although it is still part of the Helsinki metropolitan area, it is no longer a tourist area, so you are still in the south of the country and close to the capital. And if you’re a metal fan, you can of course drive right past the scene of the “Lake Bodom Murder”. The ‘Bodominjärvi Murhapaika’ (site of the murder/crime scene) is right under your nose.

Ice Skating and Ice Hockey: A National Passion
#

Ice skating is a popular winter sport in Finland. Many Finnish schools have their own ice rinks, which are also open to the public. And then there is ice hockey, the Finnish national sport, which is an experience in itself. If you can attend a live game in Helsinki, Tampere or a smaller town like Hämeenlinna (in principle, it doesn’t matter where, as long as it’s a real match), then you’ll understand what I mean. The Finns are particularly passionate when it comes to ice hockey!

As someone who has a personal connection to the Vaasa region, I recommend you take a look at the options in the region: The Vaasa region offers a variety of skating options, from indoor and outdoor ice rinks to frozen lakes and maybe even on the sea if you dare. If you’re looking for a unique experience, you can also venture onto the frozen ice at “Eteläinen Kaupunginselkä”. But always enquire first if the locals are on the ice. They usually know when it is safe to go on the ice. Alternatively, you can also walk or run on the frozen sea ice of the Kvarken area, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Kvarken area is located north of the city of Vaasa. Please note, however, that ice skating on the sea ice can be dangerous.

Snowshoeing and Winter Hiking: A Peaceful Winter Experience
#

If you are looking for a stress-free winter experience, snowshoeing and winter hiking is a great way to experience the beauty of the Finnish winter. On well-marked trails through forests and fields, you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery and maybe even spot some wildlife such as reindeer (more in the north) and ptarmigans.

Many national parks and nature reserves offer guided snowshoe hikes that provide a unique insight into the country’s nature and ecology. However, you can also set off on your own and use the many marked trails and maps to explore the winter wonderland.

Conclusion

Winter sports in Finland are more than just skiing - the country offers a variety of other ways to experience the beauty of the Nordic winter. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, Finland has something for everyone. From skiing and snowboarding to snowshoeing and winter hiking, Finland offers a variety of activities for all interests and abilities.

So pack your warm winter gear and immerse yourself in the magic of Finnish winter sports. With its breathtaking winter scenery and modern amenities, Finland is the perfect place for a winter sports holiday.

  • Make sure you wear warm clothing. In the north it can be minus 20 degrees and colder.
  • If necessary, borrow equipment or clothing from a certified instructor if you are going on a tour or have signed up for one.
  • Check the weather forecast and ice conditions before you set off.
  • Respect the natural environment and wildlife.
