Finland is a beautiful country, they say, and anyone who has been there will hopefully confirm that. But beautiful is the wrong word. You either love Finland or you don’t. Here, it’s often gray; winters are said to be long and dark, while summers are flooded with light and can even be hot (it varies).

What makes Finland so special?

If you’re from Europe or a country with more than the current Finnish population of about 5 million residents, you’ll be surprised at how empty the country can be. And that’s something special; in the south, it’s a bit more hectic and densely populated, Helsinki, the capital, is the heart of the country, but just a few minutes’ drive, and you’re in nature. Outdoor feeling is the trend here, perfect for those who love the forest. And that’s essentially the centerpiece.

Finland, the land of “thousand lakes.”

Yes, there’s water almost everywhere. But as you travel by car or train, you’ll see a lot of forest, and to witness the impressive lakes, you’ll need to drive a bit higher. The picturesque lake landscape requires a short hike to the nearest hill.

How have I experienced Finland so far?

I’ve experienced Finland from various perspectives. Cities were explored, nightly train journeys led me to remote areas, invitations from strangers were accepted, and I’ve celebrated at festivals. Along the way, I’ve made a few acquaintances. So, in my younger years, I was often “Lost in Suomi”.
